Telephoning is the main cause of driver distraction.

Driving requires your full attention at all times to respond to any dangers that may arise. Telephoning behind the wheel is a source of distraction that reduces driver concentration by turning attention away from the road.

Driving and talking on the telephone also causes the following:

  • staring into the distance that reduces attentiveness especially to what’s happening in the rear-vision mirrors and peripheral vision,
  • impaired assessment and perception of situations, reduced attention to driving,
  • and increased heart rate reflecting increased brain activity triggered by the difficulty of doing two things at once.

When driving a car or riding a motorbike, scooter or bike, just a moment’s distraction can have dramatic consequences: when the unexpected happens, the response time of a driver talking on the phone is on average 50% slower. A vehicle’s emergency stopping distance will therefore be greater and may result in an accident.
